China’s Guizhou Province Showcases the Scale of Solar Energy Expansion

Recent aerial footage shared widely online has highlighted the extraordinary scale of solar power development in China’s Guizhou province, where extensive photovoltaic installations now cover large sections of mountainous terrain. The project reflects China’s rapid progress in expanding renewable energy capacity and its growing influence in the global solar sector.

Large-scale solar development in Guizhou began in the mid-2010s. According to publicly available energy data reported by China Daily, the province generated approximately 1.75 million kilowatts of solar power by 2018, marking its emergence as a new regional hub for clean energy production.

Expansion accelerated significantly in the following years. Installed solar capacity in Guizhou surpassed 10 million kilowatts by 2020 and continued to rise, reaching approximately 15 million kilowatts by 2023. Government policy support, access to low-cost financing, and the availability of underutilized land played a key role in enabling this growth. Areas previously unsuitable for agriculture have been successfully repurposed for large-scale solar farms despite challenging terrain and climatic conditions.

This regional development forms part of China’s broader national energy strategy. In 2020, the country committed to a substantial increase in renewable energy capacity by 2030, a goal that analysts now expect could be achieved earlier than planned.

According to data from Global Energy Monitor, China accounted for roughly 64% of global utility-scale solar and wind power projects under construction in 2024, representing approximately 339 gigawatts of capacity. By comparison, the combined capacity under development in several other major economies remains significantly lower.

Although coal continues to supply a majority share of China’s electricity generation, the rapid expansion of solar power demonstrates a clear shift in the country’s long-term energy trajectory. Large-scale projects such as those in Guizhou illustrate how renewable energy is reshaping both China’s power system and the global energy landscape.
