Afghanistan Experiences Power Outages Following Technical Fault on 220 kV Import Line feom Uzbekistan

Afghanistan’s national power utility, Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS), has announced a temporary disruption of imported electricity due to a technical fault on the 220 kV transmission line from Uzbekistan. The affected section is located along the Naibabad–Pul-e-Khumri corridor in the Tangi Tashqurghan area.

According to DABS, the outage has impacted parts of Samangan and Baghlan, as well as Parwan, Panjshir, Kapisa, Kabul, Logar, Paktia, Khost, Maidan Wardak, Ghazni, Nangarhar, and Laghman provinces, leaving these regions without imported power.

The company stated that technical teams have already arrived at the site; however, repair work has not yet begun due to severe storm conditions, which pose safety risks and limit access to the damaged section of the line. DABS emphasized that restoration efforts will start as soon as weather conditions allow.

In the meantime, DABS has assured the public that electricity supply in affected cities will be partially supported through domestic generation sources to reduce the impact on consumers.

From a technical perspective, 220 kV transmission lines form a critical part of Afghanistan’s high-voltage backbone network. Any fault at this voltage level—such as damage to conductors, towers, insulators, or associated protection equipment—can simultaneously affect multiple provinces. Extreme weather events, including strong winds and storms, are common causes of such disturbances and can also delay repair operations due to strict safety requirements.

DABS has reiterated its commitment to restoring the imported power as quickly as possible and thanked customers for their patience during the interruption.
